All of us, in our lives, everyday face the challenge of proving your worth to your boss..
We believe that we, the educated, technically sound employees should be recognised. for our work. To get this recognition, we don't feel that extra mile of learning more, reading more and doing more..
Inspite of all these, ironically, at very few instances hard work pays or at least thats how we all percieve when we get our bonus or increament news at the end of the year.. Right?
In the same context, while I was thinking hard how to achieve my goals and be worthy for my company in all sense, I realised that my maid, third time in the row, is not turning up -
OMG!!! Now What???? (my face wide opened... hair curled up in question mark style.. feeling the worst of all the times again.. yet again.. THAT MAID.. didn't turn up)
And while with all these intense feelings & over rated emotions and my melodramatic dialogues were getting there way out through my constant grumbling for that one hour when I tried managing everything to cook and clean, a thought passed my mind and I wondered....
What made her so special to me, all the time, everytime. Honestly, I want her to come everyday, I want leaves but can't give one to her. I found her so Irreplaceable and important in my life... I wondered Why ?? Why this person with no technical or litterate abilities is irreplaceable? Do they know better softer skills than us? Are they actually good in, what we call, "office politics" or rather "home to home politics"?
Are they actually the best supply managers? Are they highly networked? Are they the good peers?
I observed what they actually do to be like the one they are -
Picture this:
1) Your maid comes on time, do what is required - This is bare minimum
2) Not doing anything extra till asked for and then doing it with perfection so that you tend to ask for more and they can ask for raise - Smart worker and not hard worker ;)
3) She talks and bitch about your neighbour - Uphold your self esteem
4) She tells you how good you are and how bad the other ones are - Home to Home Politics
5) She tells you what your neighbours are doing, act as social networking site for you - Highly networked
6) No other maid will take up your job till the first leaves - Good peers to each other
Let's apply it to the office scenario:
If I can do my bare minimum work with perfection, be highly networked and let the boss know how good he/ she is ( also how bad other bossess are), showcasing them a sample work of that extra mile (instead of walking that mile) I can do, be good to my peers, will I can also be that irrreplaceable employee for my manager?
Off course, a thought to ponder on!
f not all, at least I can apply few of my observations to my office scenario to see what change can they bring to my goals and my relations to my manager.
Somebody has rightly said - its good to be educated and technically sound because that FETCHES you job but its still the most important thing to be smart because that SUSTAIN your job!!
Luckily, in these recession times, I have a job.. it's time to Sustain it!
